About this place

Wonmi-dong Catholic Church is a parish in Bucheon District 2 of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a local center where Catholics in the Wonmi-dong area of Bucheon gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists Wonmi-dong as a parish of the diocese and records Our Lady of Lourdes as its patronal title.

Situated within one of Bucheon's long-established residential areas, Wonmi-dong has the character of a parish closely connected to the everyday life of local residents. Dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, it forms part of the regional pastoral structure together with the other parishes of Bucheon District 2. The church can be understood today as a place sustaining a Catholic community that has continued in the neighborhood over many years.

History & origins

Wonmi-dong Parish was established on December 25, 1977, after being separated from Sosa Catholic Church. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records that date as the parish's foundation, and the Digital Bucheon Encyclopedia likewise explains that Wonmi-dong became an independent parish through separation from Sosa. The new pastoral unit emerged amid the urban growth of Bucheon and the increase of local Catholics.

The first pastor was Father Patrick Cho of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. The young community gradually built the practical foundations of parish life, and local historical material records the completion of the rectory in March 1978. These developments show the early process by which the newly created parish acquired the institutional base needed for an independent community.

Wonmi-dong Parish subsequently continued its life of faith alongside changes in Bucheon's residential neighborhoods. The early history that can be securely documented in this research follows a clear sequence: separation from Sosa, the arrival of the first pastor, and the establishment of the rectory. Other architectural changes or detailed milestones should be added only when they can be supported by further reliable sources.
