About this place
Wondang-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Geomdan District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a local center where Catholics in the Wondang-dong area of Seo-gu, Incheon, gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists Wondang-dong as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and records St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron saint.
Within the residential area that developed as Geomdan and Wondang urbanized, the parish has served to bring local Catholics together as one faith community. Today it forms part of the pastoral structure of the Geomdan District together with neighboring parishes in northwestern Incheon. Its dedication to St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the first Korean Catholic priest, gives the parish a clear spiritual identity.
History & origins
Wondang-dong Parish was created amid population growth and urban development in the Geomdan and Wondang areas of Seo-gu, Incheon. The Catholic Times reported that the Diocese of Incheon established Wondang-dong Parish on November 24, 2004, and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the same date as its foundation. At the time of establishment, its territory comprised all of Wondang-dong and part of Dangha-dong.
This gave Catholics in the Wondang area an independent pastoral unit in which to build their parish community after separation from existing parish structures. As the Geomdan new-town area and surrounding residential zones continued to develop, the local parish network was further subdivided.
One such change was the establishment of Ara-dong Parish on January 16, 2023. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records Wondang-dong as Ara-dong's mother parish, showing that Wondang-dong later became a base from which another local Catholic community was formed. The history of Wondang-dong therefore follows a clear pattern: a parish established in response to growth in a developing area, which in turn later served as a mother parish for further pastoral expansion.
