About this place
Unyang-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Gimpo District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a local center where Catholics in the Unyang-dong area of Gimpo gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists Unyang-dong as a parish of the Gimpo District and records it as an independent parish with no mission stations.
Located within the Gimpo Hangang New Town living area, Unyang-dong is distinctive as a relatively recently organized Catholic community. Rather than an old tradition or shrine history, the key to understanding the place is the process by which a parish community took root within a newly developed urban area. Today it forms part of the Diocese of Incheon's regional pastoral structure together with the other parishes of the Gimpo District.
History & origins
A distinct preparatory phase can be documented before the establishment of Unyang-dong Parish. In late 2015, diocesan personnel announcements included an assignment described as “residing in Taeri and preparing Unyang-dong,” showing that the Diocese of Incheon was laying pastoral groundwork in the area before launching a new parish.
In January 2017, a new appointment was announced for the “pastor of newly established Unyang-dong,” and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea records January 9, 2017, as the parish's establishment date. The preparatory assignment thus developed into the formal creation of an independent parish community.
Based on reliable public sources, the clearest account of Unyang-dong's early history is this movement from preparatory pastoral work to the establishment of a full parish. Details of later church construction or changes in territorial jurisdiction were not sufficiently documented in the authoritative sources reviewed here and therefore have not been stated as fact.
