About this place

Unseo-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Yeongjong District of the Diocese of Incheon and serves the Catholic community of Unseo-dong and the airport new-town area on Yeongjongdo Island. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and records “Gate of Heaven” as its patronal title. “Gate of Heaven” is one of the traditional titles of the Virgin Mary and forms an important spiritual symbol of the parish.

Today Unseo-dong belongs to the Yeongjong District together with parishes such as Unnam, Yeongjong, and Yongyu. In an island area shaped by the international airport and new urban development, the parish provides a place where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its present character is best understood as a local Catholic community connecting the faithful within Unseo-dong's combined airport and residential living area.

History & origins

The history of Unseo-dong Parish begins under the name “Singonghang [New Airport] Parish.” According to Catholic Times, it was separated from Yeongjong Parish and established in January 2002, at that time serving the entire airport new-town area of Unseo-dong. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives January 21, 2002, as its establishment date.

After its establishment, the community worked to secure a new church. On June 13, 2004, Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san of Incheon presided over the dedication of the new Singonghang Parish church. The new complex consisted of a parish building and an office building, with spaces for worship, dining, rest, and group meetings. This was an important stage in which the new airport-town community gained the physical foundation of an independent parish.

The parish name later settled into the place-based name Unseo-dong. The Diocese of Incheon still lists it as “Unseo-dong (formerly Singonghang),” preserving the continuity between the two names. In 2026, a diocesan district reorganization placed the parish in the newly formed Yeongjong District, continuing its development from a parish founded during the airport-development era into one of the established parishes of the broader Yeongjong area.
