About this place

Taeri Catholic Church is a quasi-parish of the Gimpo district in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in and around Taeri, Gochon-eup, through an independent local pastoral community. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists it not as a mission station but as “Taeri (Quasi-Parish),” with its own pastor responsible for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Its status as a quasi-parish shows that the local Catholic community has a stable pastoral structure while remaining distinct from a fully erected parish within the diocese. The Taeri community developed as urbanization and changing patterns of life in the Gimpo area created a need for closer pastoral care than existing parishes alone could provide. Today it forms part of the network of parish communities that serve Catholics throughout the Gimpo district.

History & origins

Before Taeri was established as a quasi-parish, the area was already receiving dedicated pastoral care. In a 2017 clergy appointment of the Diocese of Incheon, Father Yun Gyeong-seop was assigned as the priest “in charge of Taeri,” showing that the local Catholic community was developing beyond ordinary dependence on a neighboring parish into a distinct pastoral unit. At the time, the priest resided in Taeri while also helping prepare the nearby Unyang-dong parish.

Building on this dedicated pastoral structure, the diocese reorganized Taeri as a quasi-parish in January 2020. In the clergy appointments of that period, the former designation “in charge of Taeri” was changed to “pastor of Taeri Quasi-Parish,” and the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records January 13, 2020, as the establishment date of Taeri (Quasi-Parish). This marked the transition from a temporary or delegated pastoral arrangement to a more stable quasi-parish structure.

Taeri continues today as one of the quasi-parishes of the Gimpo district in the Diocese of Incheon. Public sources provide clearer evidence for the development of its pastoral status—from a dedicated mission to a quasi-parish—than for a detailed construction history of its church building. The core history of the community therefore lies in the gradual establishment of independent local pastoral care and its later stabilization within the diocesan structure.
