About this place
Sosabon-dong Parish belongs to the Bucheon 1 District of the Diocese of Incheon, and its patron is Saint Michael the Archangel. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists it as Sosabon-dong Parish. It serves Catholics in the Sosabon-dong living area as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community activities. Although it is a relatively recent independent parish, it was formed within the longer lineage of Catholic life in the Sosa area.
The parish was created by separation from Sosabon 3-dong Parish as population and local living patterns changed, and it now maintains its own liturgical and community life. Its dedication to Saint Michael the Archangel expresses its identity as an independent faith community within the diocese. For visitors, the parish illustrates how the older Catholic roots of Bucheon have continued to branch out in response to new residential areas and pastoral needs.
History & origins
Sosabon-dong Parish was established in January 2012 when the Diocese of Incheon reorganized pastoral boundaries in the Sosa area of Bucheon. At the time, the Catholic Times reported that the new parish was separated from Sosabon 3-dong Parish and would serve parts of Sosa Bon 1-dong and Sosa Bon 3-dong. The Catholic Church directory in Korea also records January 2012 as the time of establishment. Although the two sources give different specific days, they agree that the new parish became independent in that month.
At its establishment, the community was reported to comprise 936 households and 2,551 Catholics and to belong to the Bucheon 1 District. This record reflects the need for a new pastoral center as the older Sosabon 3-dong Parish grew and local living areas became more differentiated. From the time of separation, the new parish began its own liturgical and sacramental life and gradually became the Catholic community for the Sosabon-dong area.
The Catholic Church directory continues to list Sosabon-dong as an independent parish under the patronage of Saint Michael the Archangel. The available reliable sources concentrate mainly on the initial separation and establishment, so later details about construction or facility changes cannot be stated with confidence. Even so, the 2012 separation marks an important point when the long-standing Catholic community of the Sosa area was reorganized in response to changing population and local living patterns.
