About this place
Sorae Port Catholic Church is the church of a parish belonging to the Namdong District of the Diocese of Incheon. As its present name suggests, it serves Catholics in the area around Sorae Port as a center for Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and parish community life. The parish patron is St. Teresa of Calcutta, and devotion to her gives the community an important symbol of love and service toward the poor and vulnerable.
Current parish life includes activities in which members meditate on the Gospel and seek ways to share it in everyday life, showing that the parish is not only a liturgical space but also a community in which Catholics learn to put the Gospel into practice. A relic of St. Teresa of Calcutta is also enshrined in a devotional space in the church. The local identity of Sorae Port and the saint's spirituality of charitable love together shape the character of the parish as a place where faith is carried into communal life.
History & origins
Sorae Port Parish began in January 2009 when the Diocese of Incheon established a new parish in the Nonhyeon 1-dong area. The current Catholic directory and a 2015 Catholic Times report give different specific days for the foundation, so this account uses only the point on which the sources agree: the parish was established in January 2009. At first it was not called Sorae Port Parish but Nonhyeon 1-dong Parish, following the administrative district name.
A change that made the parish's local identity more explicit came in 2015. Effective May 8 of that year, the Diocese of Incheon changed the name from Nonhyeon 1-dong Parish to “Sorae Port Parish.” By replacing an administrative neighborhood name with a widely recognized local place-name, the parish placed its relationship with the Sorae Port community directly into its own name.
In 2016, the year Mother Teresa was canonized, a fragment of cloth bearing her blood was enshrined in the parish. The parish worked through the Missionaries of Charity's motherhouse in India to receive the relic and, after diocesan verification and guidance, held an enshrinement ceremony following the canonization. This event gave concrete expression to the parish's devotion to its patron. Since then, Sorae Port Parish has continued its history with both the identity of its local community and the spirituality of charitable love associated with St. Teresa of Calcutta.
