About this place

Songnae 1-dong Parish belongs to the Bucheon 1 District of the Diocese of Incheon, and its patron is Our Lady, Star of the Sea. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists Songnae 1-dong as an independent parish in the Bucheon area. It serves Catholics in and around Songnae-dong as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The Marian title “Star of the Sea,” traditionally associated with guidance toward Christ on the journey of faith, gives the parish a distinctive spiritual identity.

The parish was formed relatively recently through a reorganization of territories that had belonged to several neighboring parishes in Bucheon. It therefore differs from a parish created simply by division from a single mother parish: it brought Catholics from adjacent pastoral areas together into a new unit based on their local living area. Building on that origin, the parish now enables local Catholics to participate more closely in liturgy, the sacraments, formation, and fellowship within their own neighborhood.

History & origins

At the beginning of 2008, the Diocese of Incheon established several new parishes in response to growth in the Catholic population, and Songnae 1-dong Parish became independent as part of that reorganization. The Catholic Times reported that the new parish was created by taking territory from three existing Bucheon parishes—Simgokbon-dong, Sang-dong, and Ilsin-dong. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records January 14, 2008, as its establishment date.

This way of establishing the parish is central to understanding its beginnings. Rather than being a simple daughter parish of one mother parish, it reorganized areas that had belonged to different parishes and brought them together around a new local living area. The early community therefore began with Catholics from different parish backgrounds learning to form a shared parish identity and liturgical community.

The current directory continues to list Songnae 1-dong as an independent parish in the Bucheon 1 District and identifies Our Lady, Star of the Sea, as its patron. Reliable public sources do not provide enough detail to state later construction or relocation history with confidence, so such details have not been added. The establishment in 2008 nevertheless clearly reflects the way Bucheon’s parish network became more closely organized in response to urban growth and pastoral boundary adjustments.
