About this place
Sipjeong-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon in Sipjeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu, and belongs to the Bupyeong pastoral district. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies Saint Vincent as its patron and records the participation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in parish ministry. Named for the neighborhood it serves, the parish has become a community center linking Catholics in Sipjeong-dong and nearby areas with the diocese.
A parish is the basic pastoral community in which local Catholics center their faith on the Mass and the sacraments and support one another through catechesis and communal activity. Sipjeong-dong Parish fulfills this role within the residential neighborhoods of Bupyeong and carries a distinct identity under the patronage of Saint Vincent. Today the church continues to connect the daily faith of parishioners with the pastoral life of the Diocese of Incheon.
History & origins
Sipjeong-dong Parish was established by dividing existing parish territory as the Catholic population of the Bupyeong area grew. A 1983 report in The Catholic Times stated that the Diocese of Incheon would establish Sipjeong-dong Parish effective September 1 by separating part of Juwon Parish. The new parish initially covered all of Sipjeong-dong and part of Ganseok 1-dong, and Father Hwang Sang-geun was appointed its first pastor.
The contemporary report also described Sipjeong-dong as the forty-second parish to be established in the Diocese of Incheon. That detail places its creation within the broader early-1980s reorganization of the parish network as Incheon and Bupyeong continued to urbanize and their Catholic communities expanded.
The official Korean Catholic directory likewise records September 1, 1983, as the parish establishment date, confirming the contemporary account. Since then Sipjeong-dong Catholic Church has taken root as an independent parish in the Bupyeong district and has continued to serve the faith life of local Catholics.
