About this place

Simgok Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon in Simgok-dong, Bucheon, and belongs to the Bucheon 1 pastoral district. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies the Resurrection of Jesus as its patronal dedication. Today the parish is a local center where Catholics in the urban area of Bucheon gather around the Mass and the sacraments and continue their communal life of faith.

The Resurrection is the key spiritual sign through which the identity of Simgok Parish can be understood. Centered on faith in the risen Christ, the parish gathers believers to live the meaning of hope and new life in ordinary circumstances and connects them with the wider diocese through liturgy, catechesis, and parish community. Formed amid the growth of Bucheon, Simgok has long served as a stable pastoral base for Catholics in the area.

History & origins

Simgok Parish was established in response to urban expansion and the growth of the Catholic population in the Bucheon area. A 1976 report in The Catholic Times stated that the Diocese of Incheon created Simgok-dong Parish effective January 1 by dividing territory from Sosa Parish and Samjeong (Ojeong) Parish and appointed Father Derek as its first pastor. The new parish initially covered a broad area that included parts of Simgok-dong, Songnae-dong, and Jung-dong, as well as several districts and mission stations then belonging to Siheung-gun.

As the parish community grew, work continued toward a dedicated church building. Construction of the new church began after a groundbreaking in 1993, and on October 31, 1997, the completed church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop William J. McNaughton of Incheon. Contemporary reporting described the building as expressing the theme of the Resurrection, using an egg-like form to symbolize the birth of new life.

The church-building project was therefore more than an expansion of facilities; it gave architectural form to the parish’s patronal theme and spirituality. The history shows a parish that began with responsibility for a wide territory, took root as Bucheon urbanized, and eventually developed its own church and communal structure. Simgok Catholic Church continues today on the foundation of this history of parish division and church construction.
