About this place

Seungbong Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Incheon, located on Seungbongdo Island in Jawol-myeon, Ongjin-gun, and currently under the pastoral jurisdiction of Yonghyeon 5-dong Parish. Rather than being an independent parish, it is a local community base where Catholics on the island continue their life of faith within the pastoral care of the parent parish. On an island separated from mainland parishes, a mission station provides a nearby point of connection with the pastoral structure of the diocese.

The significance of Seungbong Mission Station lies less in the building itself than in the link it maintains between the island community and its parish. The official Korean Catholic directory lists Seungbong separately as a mission station and identifies its parent parish, showing that even a small island community remains part of the parish and diocesan network of pastoral care. For visitors to Seungbongdo, the mission station offers a way to understand the place of Catholic faith within the everyday life of the island community.

History & origins

The exact year in which Seungbong Mission Station was first established could not be identified in the sources reviewed. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, drawing on the history of the Diocese of Incheon, nevertheless records Seungbong as a mission station under Sungui-dong Parish, confirming that the Catholic community on Seungbongdo was already being cared for within the parish system as a mission station.

As population and Catholic life grew around Incheon Port, the pastoral boundaries changed. When Yeonan Pier Parish was separated from Sungui-dong Parish and established in 1984, its original territory included Seungbong Mission Station together with Hang-dong 7-ga. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia notes that the first pastor devoted considerable attention to strengthening the new parish and revitalizing its mission station, and that parish priests later made regular visits for catechesis, retreats, and pilgrimages with the mission-station faithful.

The current official Korean Catholic directory lists Seungbong Mission Station under Yonghyeon 5-dong Parish. Its history is therefore not simply the story of one unchanging jurisdiction, but of an island Catholic community that remained linked to the parish structure through successive reorganizations of urban parishes and island pastoral care in the Diocese of Incheon.
