About this place

Sunhak-dong Catholic Church is the church of a parish community in the Yeonsu District of the Diocese of Incheon, with the Good Shepherd as its patron. The official Catholic directory of Korea also records the presence of the Servants of Mary in parish apostolate. Its essential identity is that of the parish center where Catholics in the Sunhak-dong area gather for Mass and the sacraments, prayer, catechesis, and communal life.

Located close to everyday residential life, Sunhak-dong Parish helps connect the faith life of different generations and the relationships that form a Catholic parish community. Its patronage of the Good Shepherd also expresses the community's desire to follow Christ's care and guidance. Rather than changeable information such as current Mass times or clergy assignments, the key point for visitors is that this is an established parish of the Diocese of Incheon serving the liturgical and communal life of local Catholics.

History & origins

Sunhak-dong Parish was established as a new parish during a period of residential development and Catholic growth in southern Incheon. A contemporary report in The Catholic Times stated that the Diocese of Incheon erected Sunhak-dong Parish effective January 29, 1993, with a temporary rectory in an apartment complex within the Sunhak housing development area. This shows that the parish did not begin with the present church building; rather, the Catholic community was first organized within a newly developing residential district and then built up its pastoral base.

The first pastor was Father Bernard Oxley of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. The Catholic Times later recorded that he served as the first pastor of the newly established Sunhak-dong Parish in 1993. The parish's early foundation was therefore shaped by the meeting of missionary pastoral experience and a growing urban Catholic community. It subsequently became established as a regular parish within the Yeonsu District of the Diocese of Incheon and continues in that line today.

The current Catholic directory lists the foundation date as “1993.2.29,” but February 29 did not exist in 1993. For that reason, this account follows the contemporary Catholic Times report giving January 29, 1993 as the date of erection. Rather than combining conflicting dates, the history here is limited to the founding context and the first pastor that can be supported by reliable sources.
