About this place
Seoknam-dong Parish belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Incheon and serves the Catholics of the Seoknam-dong area of Incheon through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory in Korea records Saint Francis of Assisi as the parish patron and continues to list Seoknam-dong as an independent parish of the Diocese of Incheon.
A distinctive feature of the parish is the continuation of a Franciscan pastoral tradition as part of its present identity. The official directory also lists the Order of Friars Minor community named “St. Francis Friary/Parish, Seoknam-dong, Incheon” at the same location, confirming the close connection between the religious community and parish ministry. Seoknam-dong Parish can therefore be understood both as a local parish and as a Catholic community in which the spirituality and pastoral tradition of Saint Francis of Assisi and the Franciscans remain visibly present.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Seoknam-dong was formed before the establishment of the parish itself. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that in the mid-1950s, when Seoknam-dong was under Bupyeong Parish, a small group of Catholics began gathering in a private home for mission-station services. The early faithful secured a hall for the community, and on January 13, 1961, a formal mission station was established around several Catholic households. The following year, land at the present parish site was purchased and a new mission hall was built. Jurisdiction later passed successively to Bupyeong 1-dong Parish and Songnim-dong Parish.
As the mission-station community grew, the Diocese of Incheon elevated Seoknam-dong to parish status on October 6, 1974, and entrusted its pastoral care to the Franciscans. The first parish community began construction of a church in April 1975, completed the building in September, and celebrated its dedication on October 24. From this point, the local Catholic community that had developed during the mission-station period entered a new stage as an independent parish whose ministry was closely connected with a religious order.
The parish facilities and territory continued to change. A rectory was built in 1979, a Marian garden was created in 1981, and in 1983 a local community of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary was established. As the church became too small for the growing congregation, work on a new church began in 1988 but was interrupted by the bankruptcy of the construction company. The church, rectory, and catechetical rooms were eventually completed in 1991, and the new church was dedicated in October 1992.
As it grew, Seoknam-dong Parish also contributed to the expansion of the Catholic pastoral network in western Incheon by giving rise to new parishes such as Gajwa-dong, Gajeong-dong, and Gajeong 3-dong. The Franciscan pastoral tradition that continues at Seoknam-dong today is rooted in the formal relationship established when the parish was elevated in 1974.
