History & origins

Sau 2-dong Parish began when the Diocese of Incheon established the parishes of Sau 2-dong and Okgil-dong effective January 15, 2018. According to the diocesan announcement reported at the time, Sau 2-dong was assigned to the Gimpo District and was given territory divided from the areas previously served by Pungmu-dong and Sau-dong parishes. The new parish was reported to have 412 households and 947 Catholics. Because an independent address had not yet been determined, it began with a temporary parish office inside Pungmu-dong Catholic Church.

This way of beginning shows a pattern different from parishes founded around an already completed church building: the pastoral community and territory were established first, and an independent physical base was developed afterward. The Catholic Church directory in Korea now lists Sau 2-dong as an independent parish with its own representative address, confirming that the community that began from a temporary office later secured its own parish base.

The official and Catholic sources reviewed here do not publish enough detail to reconstruct every stage of construction or a dedication ceremony in the intervening years. It is therefore more accurate not to add unverified construction dates or events, but to regard the 2018 diocesan establishment, the temporary-office beginning, and the later appearance as a fully independent parish as the securely documented framework of Sau 2-dong’s history.
