About this place

Sangok 3-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Bupyeong District of the Diocese of Incheon, with Saint Paul Chong Hasang as its patron. It became an independent parish amid urban development and growth in the Catholic population around Sangok-dong, and has since served as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal life for local Catholics. Although its present name is Sangok 3-dong, the parish used different names in its early years as local place names and administrative divisions changed, so its beginnings cannot be understood from the current name alone.

The parish site also represents more than the church building itself. Before the parish was established, a Catholic social-welfare facility already stood on the site. As the parish developed, an adoration chapel, a Marian garden, and a statue of its patron saint were added, broadening the space for prayer and devotional life. Dedicated to Saint Paul Chong Hasang, Sangok 3-dong Parish can therefore be understood as a local parish community whose everyday life of faith continues upon these accumulated historical layers.

History & origins

The Catholic history of the site occupied by Sangok 3-dong Parish predates the establishment of the parish itself. In July 1977, Father A. V. Keane, the first pastor of Sangok-dong Parish, purchased a site of about 500 pyeong and established Saint Vincent’s Home, an orphanage, there. From the late 1970s, nearby military units relocated and large apartment complexes were developed, bringing a rapid increase in the Catholic population. Sangok-dong Parish therefore sought a division of its territory, and on September 20, 1986, the Diocese of Incheon established a new parish from parts of Sangok-dong and Bupyeong 3-dong parishes. It was initially known as Hwarang Farm Parish and was formally named Sangok 2-dong Parish on November 2 of that year.

The new community held a groundbreaking ceremony for its church on March 28, 1987. The building, with one basement level and three above-ground floors, was completed on March 31, 1988, and dedicated on September 17 of the same year in a liturgy presided over by Bishop McNaughton. During this period the parish also opened a kindergarten in response to the needs of working families, gradually establishing facilities for liturgy, education, and community life in the newly developed apartment district.

A parish credit union was founded in 1990, and an adoration chapel was established in 1991, expanding the community’s devotional life. When Bupyeong 1-dong Parish was newly established in 1993, some parishioners’ registrations were transferred to the new parish, and on January 31 of that year the parish itself was renamed Sangok 3-dong. A statue of its patron, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, was erected in 1994, and a Marian garden was completed and blessed in 1996.

These developments show how Sangok 3-dong grew from a newly divided parish created in response to population growth into a community rooted in the area through church construction, boundary adjustments, and the development of spaces for devotion. Its present name and church are the result of a community founded in the late 1980s adapting over time to administrative and urban changes around it.
