About this place
Sang 1-dong Parish belongs to the Bucheon 2 District of the Catholic Diocese of Incheon. Within the residential area of Sang-dong in Bucheon, it serves as a center where Catholics participate in Mass and the sacraments, receive catechetical formation, and sustain parish community life. The official Catholic directory in Korea lists Saint Michael the Archangel as the parish patron and records the participation of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus in the parish apostolate.
The character of Sang 1-dong Parish lies in the presence of an independent parish community close to daily life in an area developed with large apartment complexes. Together with other parishes in the Sang-dong area, it forms a local pastoral network through which Catholics can take part in the liturgy, learn the faith, and build relationships with neighbors in their ordinary surroundings. The place is therefore best understood not merely as a church building, but as the Catholic parish community in which the faithful of Sang 1-dong live their shared life of faith.
History & origins
The establishment of Sang 1-dong Parish took place amid the development of the new town around Sang-dong, Bucheon, and the growth of the Catholic population in the 1990s. As the population of Jung-dong and Sang-dong increased rapidly, Sang-dong Parish had to divide its territory several times, and a separate pastoral community became necessary in Sang 1-dong as new apartment complexes were built there.
The official Catholic directory in Korea records September 12, 1996, as the date of establishment of Sang 1-dong Parish. The history of Sang-dong Parish in the Digital Bucheon Culture Encyclopedia states that, when apartment complexes were established in Sang 1-dong in September of that year, Sang-dong Parish transferred 841 households and 2,635 registered Catholics to the newly separated Sang 1-dong Parish. The beginning of the parish was therefore not a simple change of name, but the creation of an independent pastoral unit by separating an actual body of faithful from Sang-dong Parish as a new residential district took shape.
Sang 1-dong Parish subsequently became established as an independent parish of the Diocese of Incheon and today belongs to the Bucheon 2 District. Its history illustrates how the diocesan pastoral structure was adjusted to the growth of Bucheon’s new town, dividing parish territory according to local living areas so that a growing Catholic population could continue its liturgical and sacramental life close to home.
