About this place

Samsan-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Bupyeong District of the Diocese of Incheon, with the Holy Family as its patron. Located within the urban residential area of Samsan-dong in Bupyeong-gu, it serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, and is identified as an independent parish in both the Catholic Church directory in Korea and diocesan records.

The parish was formed by dividing territory previously served by Galsan-dong Parish in response to growth in the Catholic population around Samsan-dong. Because its origin is directly connected with the pastoral needs of an expanding urban neighborhood, its present significance lies less in being a historic monument or pilgrimage site than in serving as a local parish where Catholics can sustain sacramental life close to where they live. Its patronage by the Holy Family is also an important element in understanding a parish identity rooted in faith within family and everyday life.

History & origins

Samsan-dong Parish began when the Diocese of Incheon established it, together with the quasi-parishes of Manisan, Yongyu, and Daecheongdo, effective January 26, 2004. A report in the Catholic Peace Newspaper stated that Samsan-dong was created through a division from Galsan-dong Parish and initially served part of the Samsan-dong area. At its establishment the new parish had 503 households and 1,245 Catholics, indicating that the division responded to population and Catholic growth centered on the developing residential districts of Samsan-dong.

The establishment of the new parish relieved some of the pastoral burden of Galsan-dong and enabled residents of Samsan-dong to receive Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis closer to their homes. The simultaneous creation of quasi-parishes in island areas also shows that the Diocese of Incheon was reorganizing pastoral territories at the time to address the very different needs of expanding urban districts and remote islands.

The Catholic Church directory in Korea records January 26, 2004, as the foundation date of Samsan-dong Parish and lists the Holy Family as its patron. This research did not locate sufficient official documentation for a detailed chronology of later church construction or a dedication ceremony, so no unverified events have been added. The securely documented core of the parish’s history is that it became an independent parish through separation from Galsan-dong in 2004 and has continued since then as the local parish of the Samsan-dong community.
