About this place
Samsan Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Incheon and serves as a place where the Catholic community of Seokmodo in Samsan-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, sustains its life of faith. The Catholic Church directory in Korea lists Samsan separately as a mission station of the Diocese of Incheon, and its current address matches the place information in the package. The key to understanding the site is that it is not an independent parish with a resident priest like a parish church, but a mission station where a small island community continues prayer and participation in the Church’s liturgical life.
Seokmodo is an island area west of Ganghwa Island, and Catholics there have maintained their community around the mission station despite the limits of distance and transportation. Regional cultural material refers to the site as “Samsan Mission Station of Naega Catholic Church,” indicating its present connection with a nearby parish. Samsan is therefore best understood not through the scale of a large church building or an independent parish, but as a place that reflects the enduring life and solidarity of a small Catholic community within an island village.
History & origins
The research did not identify an official chronology that establishes an exact foundation date for Samsan Mission Station, but its historical existence within the Catholic history of Ganghwa is documented. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on Ganghwa Parish states that after Ganghwa was separated from Gimpo Parish and established in 1958, it exercised pastoral responsibility for all of Ganghwa County and explicitly lists Samsan among its mission stations. This record shows that, at least by the historical period covered by the encyclopedia, a Catholic community at Seokmo-ri in Samsan-myeon existed as a mission station under Ganghwa Parish.
Because the Ganghwa area combines islands with a broad rural region, a single parish church could not easily provide close pastoral care to every Catholic community. A network of mission stations therefore developed across different townships and islands. Samsan was one point in this network, providing a local place where Catholics on Seokmodo could gather for prayer and sustain communal faith life without always traveling to the main parish church.
Today, the Catholic Church directory in Korea continues to list Samsan as a mission station of the Diocese of Incheon, while regional cultural material refers to it as “Samsan Mission Station of Naega Catholic Church.” This indicates that the mission station recorded historically under Ganghwa Parish later became connected with nearby Naega Parish as parish territories within the diocese changed. The sources reviewed here, however, do not establish when or through what formal process that change of pastoral jurisdiction occurred.
The most reliable account of Samsan’s history is therefore not to assign an unsupported foundation year, but to trace its documented presence within the older mission-station network of Ganghwa and its continued existence as a Catholic mission community on Seokmodo through later changes in parish jurisdiction.
