About this place
Samjeong-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Bucheon area of the Diocese of Incheon, under the patronage of the Queen of Heaven. Although it is now known as Samjeong-dong Parish, it began under the name Ojeong Parish and later adopted its present name as local administrative and residential patterns changed. It has served Catholics in Samjeong-dong and nearby neighborhoods through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities.
The parish was established relatively early in response to Catholic population growth and the difficulty of traveling long distances from the outskirts of the expanding city. As it grew, it in turn gave rise to daughter parishes and helped shape the Catholic pastoral network of the Bucheon area. Religious priests, diocesan clergy, and women religious participated in its pastoral life at different times, while educational spaces and local service also developed. Samjeong-dong is therefore best understood not only as a church building, but as the continuing home of a parish community that began in the Ojeong area and expanded alongside the urban growth of northern Bucheon.
History & origins
The origins of Samjeong-dong Parish are connected with the growth of Sosa Parish in the early 1970s. Catholics living in Ojeong-myeon experienced difficulty traveling to Sosa Catholic Church, so Father Schmidt of Sosa Parish began planning a division of the parish and organized a committee for church construction in November 1970. In May 1971 a site of about 1,769 pyeong was purchased in Samjeong-ri, Ojeong-myeon, Bucheon-gun, and construction began. On September 12 of that year, the Diocese of Incheon established Ojeong Parish through separation from Sosa Parish. Pastoral responsibility was entrusted to the Society of Mary, and Father Schmidt was appointed the first pastor.
Soon after the parish was founded, a two-story church and rectory were completed on September 20, 1971, and dedicated on December 8. The parish subsequently expanded its facilities and mission-station ministry in response to population growth and the widening residential area. Land was obtained in Yeowol-ri in 1972, and a mission hall was built there in 1973. Beginning in June 1973, construction of a new main church building also proceeded; it was completed the following year and dedicated on April 6.
On March 25, 1982, the parish name was changed from Ojeong Parish to Samjeong-dong Parish. In 1983 the Yeowol-ri mission station was elevated to an independent parish and some Catholics were transferred to the new community. In 1986 pastoral responsibility for Samjeong-dong returned from the religious congregation to the diocese. Women religious later assisted in parish ministry, and a convent and catechetical spaces were developed. In 1991 another Ojeong Parish was separated from Samjeong-dong, bringing a further adjustment of pastoral territory.
The history of Samjeong-dong thus began with a division intended to address the practical difficulty faced by Catholics living far from Sosa Parish and continued through church construction, a change of name, the elevation of a mission station to parish status, and the creation of additional daughter parishes. The present church carries forward the community continuity of Ojeong Parish founded in 1971 and reflects the way Catholic pastoral structures changed alongside the urban growth of northern Bucheon.
