About this place
Sagot Mission Station is a Catholic community site in the Sagot area of Baengnyeong-myeon that is listed separately as a mission station in the Catholic Church directory in Korea under the Diocese of Incheon. Incheon Metropolitan City’s island portal explains that Baengnyeong Parish oversees a number of mission stations on the island, including Sagot, and the more recently developed Baengnyeong pilgrimage route links Baengnyeong Catholic Church with the island’s ten mission stations as a single network of faith and pilgrimage.
A field report by the Catholic Peace Newspaper describes Sagot Mission Station as retaining its white exterior walls and bell tower, with members of the Legion of Mary meeting regularly and helping to care for the interior. Unlike a parish church where a priest is ordinarily resident, a mission station is a place where a small local Catholic community sustains prayer and communal faith life. In that sense, Sagot shows how the faith of an island village continues in everyday life. Together with the other mission stations of Baengnyeong Island, it also serves as a point of pilgrimage for reflecting on the history of mission and the spirituality of martyrdom.
History & origins
The history of Sagot Mission Station is best understood within the broader development of the Catholic community on Baengnyeong Island in the mid-twentieth century. Baengnyeong Parish was established on May 9, 1959, and under the energetic pastoral work of its first pastor, Father Edward Moffett, known in Korea as Bu Yeong-bal, a number of mission stations appeared across the island around 1960. The Catholic Peace Newspaper explicitly includes Sagot among the ten mission stations on Baengnyeong that remain today. The reliable sources reviewed here, however, do not provide an exact foundation date for Sagot itself, so it would be inappropriate to assign a specific year without evidence.
Baengnyeong Island had already been connected with the maritime route of Catholic mission in Korea much earlier, in the nineteenth century. Incheon Metropolitan City materials explain that the western sea route opened by Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon allowed a number of French missionaries to use the waters around Baengnyeong as an entry point between 1846 and 1880. This does not mean that Sagot Mission Station itself dates from that period, but it forms part of the regional history of faith that later provided the setting in which a parish and numerous mission stations took root on the island.
In recent years, Baengnyeong Catholic Church and the mission stations including Sagot have been newly highlighted as a connected pilgrimage route. A 2024 report noted that Sagot’s bell tower and interior remain well cared for and that meetings and maintenance by members of the Legion of Mary continue. The history of Sagot is therefore best described, without forcing an unsupported foundation year, as part of the island mission-station tradition that took shape as the Baengnyeong parish community expanded after 1959 and has continued to the present.
