About this place
Pungmu-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gimpo District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving the Catholic community centered on Pungmu-dong in Gimpo. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patronal dedication. Located within a residential area of Gimpo, the parish enables Catholics to participate in Mass, receive catechesis, and form a community close to their everyday lives.
The parish was created as the Catholic community in Gimpo grew and the broad territory of the older Gimpo Parish was divided. Today it is one of the parishes of the Gimpo District and continues to support Catholic life in the Pungmu-dong area. Together with its Marian dedication, its central significance lies in providing a stable local place for the sacraments, faith formation, and fellowship of parishioners.
History & origins
The Diocese of Incheon established Pungmu-dong Parish on July 18, 2000, in response to growing pastoral needs in the Gimpo area. According to a report in The Catholic Times, Geomdan-dong Parish was established on the same date, while Pungmu-dong began as a new parish separated from Gimpo Parish. Its original territory included all of Pungmu-dong and Seonsu-dong, parts of Sau-dong, and all of Wondang-dong.
The division reorganized the large territory previously served by Gimpo Parish so that Catholics could have a pastoral center closer to their own living area. The new Pungmu-dong community was able to continue Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish activities within an independent parish structure. The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea likewise records July 18, 2000, as the foundation date.
Pungmu-dong Catholic Church subsequently became established as one of the parishes of the Gimpo District in the Diocese of Incheon. Its creation reflects the way the diocese adjusted parish boundaries and founded new communities in response to changing population and settlement patterns in the Gimpo area around the turn of the twenty-first century. The present parish is the continuation of that newly established local community.
