About this place
Podong Catholic Church is a parish of the Siheung–Ansan District in the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in the Podong and Misan-dong area of Siheung. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the parish’s patronal dedication. Within its local community, the parish provides a place where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and build parish life together.
Podong Parish is also significant as a parish that emerged when the Catholic community in the Siheung area grew sufficiently to form a new local jurisdiction separate from an older parish. Today it remains one of the parishes of the Siheung–Ansan District, providing the liturgical, sacramental, educational, and communal foundations needed for Catholic life in the area. Its dedication to the Assumption expresses the parish’s liturgical identity and continues to serve as a central sign of the community’s devotional life.
History & origins
The immediate origin of Podong Parish is connected with the growth of the Catholic community of Sincheon Parish. As the number of Catholics in the Siheung area increased, Sincheon divided its extensive territory several times. After the creation of Daeya-dong Parish in 1992, Podong Parish was separated in 1995. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that 188 households and 474 Catholics were transferred from Sincheon to the newly formed Podong community.
The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records August 15, 1995, as the foundation date of Podong Parish. Founded on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the parish also took the Assumption as its patronal dedication. This marked the point at which the new community gained its own pastoral base for Podong and the surrounding area, separate from the large territory previously served by Sincheon Parish.
Podong has since continued as an independent parish of the Siheung–Ansan District in the Diocese of Incheon. Its history is one example of how a large parish in the Siheung area was divided into several local communities as the Catholic population increased. The establishment of Podong Parish shows how numerical growth was translated into a new parish structure that allowed Catholics to participate in Mass and the sacraments closer to where they lived.
