About this place
Oryu-dong Catholic Church is a parish church of the Diocese of Incheon located in Oryu-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon. It is the center of parish life where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive catechesis, and build community, maintaining a Catholic presence in the area where Gimpo and northwestern Incheon meet.
Although today's Oryu-dong Parish grew from a small mission-station community, its present significance lies in sustaining the everyday faith of local Catholics. Centered on prayer and the liturgy, it is a living local church community that connects families and generations and helps the faithful live the Gospel among their neighbors.
History & origins
The Oryu-dong Catholic community began before the parish itself was established. According to a Catholic Times report on the dedication of the present church, the “Oryu-ri Mission Station,” then belonging to Gimpo Parish, was blessed on March 5, 1966, giving the local Catholic community an established place for liturgical life.
The mission-station community was raised to the status of Oryu-dong Parish on February 18, 1997. This was a turning point that enabled local Catholics to continue Mass, the sacraments, and pastoral life as an independent parish community. The transition from mission station to parish marked an important stage in the growth of the local Catholic community.
As the parish grew, construction of a new church was undertaken, with work beginning on June 13, 2013. After about a year of construction, Bishop Choi Ki-san, then bishop of the Diocese of Incheon, presided at the dedication of the new church on September 28, 2014. The community that had continued since the mission-station era thus gained its present liturgical space, linking the local faith tradition of the 1960s with today's Oryu-dong Parish.
