About this place
Onsu Catholic Church is a parish church of the Diocese of Incheon in Gilsang-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, with Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron. It is the center of parish life for Catholics mainly in Gilsang-myeon and Bureun-myeon, where they celebrate Mass and the sacraments, and it also connects the wider community through the Choji, Oduri, and Goneung-ri mission stations.
For Catholics living across the villages of southern Ganghwa, Onsu Parish is more than a church building; it is a point of connection for the community. Parish and mission stations together sustain a life of prayer and liturgy and help pass on the Catholic faith to the next generation in the region. That connecting role is central to understanding Onsu Catholic Church today.
History & origins
Catholic life in the Onsu area can be traced back to 1928. According to the official parish history, nine Catholics, including Yang Chon-myeong, moved from Palbong-myeon in Seosan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and settled in the Dokjeom village of Onsu-ri. At first they attended the Bugeun-ri mission station, but as the number of faithful increased, a believer's home was designated as the “Onsu-ri Mission Station” in June 1933 and mission-station services were held there.
As the community grew, it needed a dedicated place for the liturgy. Construction of a new mission-station building began in July 1983, and the completed building was blessed by Bishop William McNaughton (Na Gil-mo) on December 3 of that year. Until the community became a parish, this building served as the center for Mass and community life for Catholics in the Onsu area.
On August 28, 1995, Onsu-ri Mission Station was separated from Ganghwa Parish and elevated to Onsu Parish, with Father J. Sullivan of the Order of Saint Augustine appointed as the first pastor. As the community continued to grow and the older facilities aged, a new church was built in 2008, and Bishop Choi Ki-san presided at its dedication on August 24 of that year. The progression from mission station to parish and then to a new church building reflects the way the Catholic community took root and developed in southern Ganghwa.
