About this place
The Incheon community of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters is a women's religious community in Sosa-dong, Bucheon, and the “Sosa St. Benedict House of Grace” operates at the same address. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists the religious community and the retreat house separately while confirming the same address, and it identifies the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters as the religious institute responsible for the House of Grace.
The sisters' prayer and common life in the Benedictine tradition form the foundation of this place. The House of Grace developed as a retreat setting where people can step away from ordinary routines, pray, and reflect on their lives. The site therefore has a dual character: it is both a community of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters and a house that offers Catholics a place for silence, prayer, and spiritual reflection.
History & origins
The history of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters in the Sosa area is reported to have begun around November 1949, when a local community of the sisters was established. The sisters developed a base for their religious life in the area while combining common life with work.
In 1979, Catholics from nearby parishes began visiting the sisters and asking them to pray together. The convent responded by praying with them and sharing spiritual guidance helpful to their life of faith, and these encounters gradually developed into a retreat apostolate. As a result, the “Sosa St. Benedict House of Grace” opened in 1981.
As more people sought retreats, a separate retreat facility was prepared in May 1990. A distinctive feature of this history is that the apostolate did not begin from a plan to build a large retreat center; rather, it grew naturally as the sisters responded to local Catholics' requests for prayer and opened their community to the surrounding area. The present Incheon community and House of Grace continue the intertwined history of Benedictine religious life and retreat ministry that developed in this way.
