History & origins
Ongnyeon-dong Parish was established on February 25, 1981. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea records this as the foundation date of the present parish, confirming that an independent parish community had been established in the Ongnyeon-dong area by the early 1980s.
For a period, the parish was known locally as “Songdo Catholic Church.” A 2005 government administrative-appeal record explicitly refers to a location in Ongnyeon-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, as being “in front of Songdo Catholic Church,” showing that the Catholic community in Ongnyeon-dong was still widely identified by the Songdo name in the mid-2000s.
The current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists the parish as “Ongnyeon-dong” and gives the Holy Spirit as its patron. This research did not, however, identify the exact date on which the official name changed from Songdo Catholic Church to Ongnyeon-dong Catholic Church. The verified historical outline is therefore limited to the parish's foundation in 1981, the documented use of the former Songdo name, and its eventual establishment under the present Ongnyeon-dong name.
