About this place
Okgil-dong Catholic Church is a Catholic parish church of the Diocese of Incheon, with Saint James as its patron. It is the center of the parish where Catholics from Okgil-dong and nearby areas gather for Mass and the sacraments and form a community of faith, and it is currently listed as a parish in both the diocese's official parish guide and the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea.
The parish is significant as a relatively recently formed local Catholic community. It provides a place within a newly developed residential area where the faithful can continue liturgical worship, prayer, catechesis, and community life close to home, serving today as a focal point for Catholic life in the Okgil-dong area.
History & origins
Okgil-dong Parish was established by the Diocese of Incheon on January 15, 2018. Its territory was formed from Okgil-dong and part of Beombak-dong, areas that had previously belonged to Beombak-dong Parish, giving local Catholics a separate parish community of their own.
At the time of its establishment, the address of the new church had not yet been decided, so a temporary parish office operated inside Beombak-dong Catholic Church. This shows the parish's initial stage: it began administratively as an independent parish before securing a separate physical location.
The Diocese of Incheon and the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea now confirm Okgil-dong as a parish with its own church location. However, this research did not find a reliable official source establishing the exact date of the move from the temporary office or the dedication history of the present church, so those details are not asserted.
