About this place

Nonhyeon-dong Catholic Church is the church of Nonhyeon-dong Parish in the Namdong district of the Diocese of Incheon. It is the place where Catholics in Nonhyeon-dong and the surrounding residential area gather around Mass and the sacraments and sustain their parish life. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Nonhyeon-dong as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon. Since becoming an independent parish in 2008, it has served a rapidly developing urban area whose population and residential districts continued to grow.

The present church is the permanent worship space eventually secured by a parish community that for years had to use rented floors in a commercial building. In that sense, the church is more than a structure: it embodies the process by which a Catholic community took root in a newly forming urban neighborhood. Its church and educational spaces support liturgy, catechesis, and parish activities across generations, providing a base from which faith and service to neighbors can be connected within the local community.

History & origins

Nonhyeon-dong Parish was established in January 2008, separated from Gojan Parish in response to rapid residential development and a growing Catholic population in the Namdong area of Incheon. At its creation, its territory included Nonhyeon-dong, the Nonhyeon housing-development district, and part of Gojan-dong. The new parish did not begin with a completed church of its own; it used several floors of a commercial building for worship and community life while laying its foundations.

As the need for a permanent church became clearer, the parish secured a site near Nonhyeon Station in 2011. Construction could not begin immediately because of the financial burden, and parishioners raised building funds through donations and community initiatives. The years in the temporary setting were therefore also a period in which the community itself prepared the basis for its future church.

Construction of the new church began in September 2014 and was completed in July 2015. On November 29 of that year, Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san of Incheon presided over its dedication. It had taken about seven years for the community that began in rented commercial space to obtain a permanent church and educational facilities. The process illustrates how a new parish took shape amid the urban expansion of southern Incheon and, through the participation of its faithful, established stable spaces for liturgy and formation.
