About this place
Naengjeong-ri Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Seonwon-myeon, Ganghwa County, within the Diocese of Incheon and is one of the long-standing mission communities of the Ganghwa area. A Catholic Peace Broadcasting and Newspaper field report describes it as a place where local Catholics living away from the parish church have continued their prayer and liturgical life, and where the chapel and Marian garden were maintained and developed through the direct participation of the faithful.
What stands out especially is the community’s active self-support. Local Catholics raised funds through their own work to provide a proper mission-station building and personally gathered stones to create the Marian garden. The significance of Naengjeong-ri lies less in elaborate facilities than in the visible traces of prayer, cooperation, and perseverance maintained by generations of local believers. Visitors can understand it as a small community space in which the everyday faith and mission-station tradition of Ganghwa remain tangible.
History & origins
Naengjeong-ri Mission Station was established in 1958 at the time Ganghwa Parish was founded. The land for the mission station was donated by Martina Lee Sun-ok, who was connected with the Yeom family associated with King Cheoljong’s maternal household. Before a proper mission building was available, local Catholics sustained community faith life by celebrating mission prayers in a tent or, at times, in the sarangchae of the nearby Yongheunggung residence.
In time, the faithful decided to raise the funds needed for a permanent mission station themselves. Records describe them making and selling tofu, soybean paste, red pepper paste, and turnip kimchi in the city to create a building fund. Their effort shows how a small local Catholic community built its sacred space through ordinary labor and cooperation rather than through a single institutional project.
After years of preparation, the present mission station was dedicated on 14 September 2006. The faithful later gathered discarded stones from a quarry and used them to create a Marian garden by hand. The history of Naengjeong-ri is therefore more than the construction history of a parish outstation; it is the story of local Catholics preserving and remaking a place of prayer together across generations.
