About this place
Naega Catholic Church is a parish of the Ganghwa District in the Diocese of Incheon and centers on the Catholic community of Naega-myeon in western Ganghwa Island. The current Catholic directory identifies St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon as its patron and records one mission station under the parish. In a relatively small rural and coastal area, the way the parish church and its mission station connect local Catholics is an important part of Naega’s present identity.
The memory of the patron saint is also expressed in the church interior and sacred art. A report on the dedication of the new church describes a relief depicting St. Andrew Kim carrying the cross, together with other works of sacred art. Naega can therefore be understood both as the ordinary parish center for Catholic life in this part of Ganghwa and as a place that helps the community remember the faith of Korea’s first priest and martyr, St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Naega grew within the mission-station system of Ganghwa Parish before becoming an independent parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on Ganghwa Parish explicitly lists “Naega Mission Station” among the mission stations that once served the wider Ganghwa area, showing that the present parish has its roots in a local mission community.
The current Catholic directory records 5 July 1999 as the establishment date of Naega Parish. A Catholic Times report on the later church dedication likewise confirms that the Naega community was elevated to parish status in 1999. As the former mission community became an independent parish, a new structure for the regular parish life of Catholics in western Ganghwa Island took shape.
After the parish was established, a new church was prepared to meet the needs of the community. On 16 November 2008, the new church was dedicated in a rite presided over by Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san, and the sanctuary included a relief and other sacred artworks centered on the parish patron, St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon. This sequence shows the development of a small mission community into an independent parish with its own new church.
