About this place

Marisstella Quasi-Parish belongs to the Seohae district of the Diocese of Incheon and was established within Marisstella, a senior residential complex, to care for the faith life of its residents. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea lists Marisstella separately as a quasi-parish of the diocese, and the Catholic Times explained at the time of its creation that its purpose was to support the religious life of residents in the senior town. Unlike an ordinary territorial parish, it is characterized by integrating liturgical and pastoral care into the life of a particular residential and welfare community.

The Marisstella complex includes a church alongside residential, welfare, and health-related facilities. The Catholic community therefore exists within the same environment in which residents live and receive care. The church is not merely an auxiliary chapel: it belongs to a pastoral unit formally established by the diocese as a quasi-parish, enabling older Catholics to continue participating in Mass, the sacraments, and communal faith life where they live. The integration of residence, care, and liturgy is central to understanding Marisstella Quasi-Parish.

History & origins

The history of Marisstella began with the development of the residential facility before the quasi-parish itself was created. According to the institution's official chronology, a building permit was obtained in July 2008, and recruitment and contracting for residents proceeded in 2013. A blessing ceremony for Marisstella was held in February 2014, and the facility was completed and opened in April of that year.

The Diocese of Incheon established Marisstella Quasi-Parish effective April 22, 2014. The Catholic Times reported that the new quasi-parish was intended to support the faith life of residents of the senior town. Marisstella's official chronology likewise records that the quasi-parish was created when the complex opened in April 2014 and that its first director and first parish priest were appointed at the same time. This shows that the management of the facility and the pastoral life of the quasi-parish were designed together from the beginning.

The official chronology also records a dedication of Marisstella Quasi-Parish in August of the same year. Thereafter the roles of institutional director and quasi-parish pastor continued in a closely connected form, and a Mass marking the first anniversary of the opening was celebrated in 2015. Later entries record pilgrimages and other community activities for residents.

This development distinguishes Marisstella from an ordinary parish formed by dividing an existing territorial parish. The quasi-parish emerged during the creation of a senior residential and care complex in order to provide liturgical and pastoral life within that community, and that integrated structure has continued as Marisstella's distinctive form of Catholic community.
