About this place
The Marianist Spirituality Center is a retreat and prayer house of the Diocese of Incheon, operated in Yangsa-myeon, Ganghwa, by the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Marianists). Both the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea and the Korean bishops' retreat-house listing identify it as a distinct retreat facility and name the Daughters of Mary Immaculate as the responsible religious institute. While distinct from the community's ordinary residential space, it is connected with the Ganghwa community at the same site and clearly functions as an apostolic place for prayer, retreats, and reflection in faith.
The center was built with a church wing and a retreat wing so that individuals and groups could stay and pray. Its purpose is not tourism or lodging in itself, but to provide space away from everyday routines where Catholics can return to Scripture and prayer and deepen communal spirituality. In the quieter environment of Ganghwa, it serves as an official retreat and prayer facility of the Diocese of Incheon shaped by Marianist spirituality and faith formation.
History & origins
The Marianist Spirituality Center was established in Ganghwa within the continuing retreat apostolate of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in Korea. After entering Korea in 1979, the congregation developed retreats and the continuing formation of the faithful as important forms of apostolate. Creating a dedicated spirituality center in Ganghwa can be understood as an extension of this ministry into a new setting.
According to the Catholic Times, groundbreaking took place in March 2011 and construction was completed after about eight months. On November 25 of that year the center was blessed in a ceremony presided over by Bishop John Baptist Jung Shin-chul, then vicar general of the Diocese of Incheon, with the congregation's superior general, religious, priests of the Ganghwa district, and lay Catholics in attendance. The report states that the facility consisted of a church wing and a retreat wing.
At the blessing the center was presented not simply as lodging but as a place where faith could be rekindled and Catholics could rediscover their vocation. This reflects the purpose of offering Marianist spirituality to the local Church through retreats and formation. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea now registers the site as the Marianist Spirituality Center of the Diocese of Incheon and identifies the Daughters of Mary Immaculate as the responsible congregation.
The decisive historical moment for this place was therefore its groundbreaking, completion, and blessing in 2011. Programs and operating details may change over time, but official Catholic sources confirm that its fundamental identity as a retreat and prayer house connected with the Ganghwa Marianist community has continued.
