About this place
The Society of Mary (Marianists) in Sangok-dong, Incheon, is a male religious community registered in the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea as the Chaminade Community. Its official English name is Society of Mary (Marianists), and it serves as a base within the Diocese of Incheon where religious members live in community and prayer. The name 'Chaminade' connects the community with the founding tradition of the Marianist Family and reflects the congregation's long-standing apostolic emphasis in Korea on education, faith formation, retreats, and the formation of lay people.
Sangok-dong developed in Korean Marianist history as more than a residence; it became a center for retreats and spiritual formation. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records the establishment of a large Chaminade retreat house in the area during the 1980s to support the spiritual growth of Catholics. The present Chaminade Community registered at Sangok-dong can therefore be understood as continuing this Marianist presence. It is important to distinguish it from a parish church: the target is a community of consecrated religious life.
History & origins
The Society of Mary's mission in Korea came after several invitations and a long period of preparation. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, invitations from the Korean Church in 1908 and 1923 could not be accepted because the congregation lacked sufficient members at the time. When conditions for overseas mission later improved, three Marianists arrived in Korea in September 1960. After language study and adaptation, they established a monastery in Mokpo in 1963, and another community was established in Seoul in 1970.
Sangok-dong became an important Marianist center during the 1980s. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that on October 2, 1984, the Chaminade Retreat House was completed in Sangok-dong, Incheon. The facility included lodging for about 150 people as well as classrooms, a hall, a church, and a dining room in a building with one basement and four above-ground floors. At a time when retreat facilities were concentrated in Seoul, the creation of a large spiritual center in the Incheon area was regarded as significant.
This Sangok-dong center became one of the places through which the Korean Marianists' emphasis on education, retreats, and faith formation expanded into the western metropolitan area. As Marianist lay communities and other apostolates developed, their forms of ministry diversified, while Sangok-dong remained a meeting point between Marianist community life and spiritual apostolate.
Today the Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea registers 375 Majang-ro in Sangok-dong as the representative address of the Society of Mary's Chaminade Community. Public sources located for this review do not establish every architectural or functional change between the 1984 retreat house and the present facilities, but they do confirm the continuing Marianist presence in Sangok-dong through the current religious community.
