About this place

Mansu 2-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Namdong district of the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in Mansu 2-dong and the surrounding residential area. The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea currently registers Mansu 2-dong as an independent parish. Because the parish was formed by dividing areas previously served by Mansu 1-dong and Mansu 3-dong, it began with the pastoral purpose of bringing parish life closer to Catholics in newly developing neighborhoods of the wider Mansu area.

For a period, the community used a commercial building as its church before establishing a permanent parish church. It has since developed around a space where liturgy, formation, retreats, and fellowship can take place. Its relatively recent history clearly shows a new parish moving from temporary facilities toward a stable church and communal foundation. Mansu 2-dong Parish can therefore be understood as a parish created in response to changing residential patterns in the Mansu area of Namdong-gu.

History & origins

Mansu 2-dong Parish was created in January 2011 as the Diocese of Incheon reorganized parish boundaries in the Mansu area. Parts of the territories previously served by Mansu 1-dong and Mansu 3-dong were assigned to the new parish, which was reported at its launch as having 493 households and 1,265 Catholics. Contemporary reporting noted that even the parish's permanent address had not yet been determined, showing that the community was organized before it had a settled church building.

In its early years, the parish had no permanent church and rented a commercial building for worship. Despite the burden of rent and maintenance, the community continued its liturgical and parish life while preparing for a new church, which was finally dedicated in 2021. This marked a roughly decade-long transition from temporary premises to a dedicated sacred and pastoral space.

After establishing the new church, the parish continued to develop activities for formation and spiritual renewal as well as liturgy. In 2024 it held a one-day retreat for the blessing of the Holy Family, described as an opportunity for healing and restoration after the strain of church construction and the COVID-19 period. The history of Mansu 2-dong Parish thus traces how a community created in response to changing urban residential patterns gradually acquired both a permanent home and a fuller pastoral foundation.
