About this place
Manisan Quasi-Parish belongs to the Ganghwa district of the Diocese of Incheon and serves the Catholic community of Hwado-myeon and the area around Manisan Mountain. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea registers it as a quasi-parish of the diocese and identifies the Sermon on the Mount as its patronal theme. Within the quasi-parish structure, which has a status between a full parish and a mission station, a resident priest provides local pastoral care centered on Mass, the sacraments, and formation in the faith.
The current directory records one mission station connected with Manisan Quasi-Parish. In the broad rural and island geography of Ganghwa, where distances to parish churches can be substantial, Manisan serves as a gathering point for Catholics in Hwado-myeon and as a pastoral link with its mission station. Although it stands near Manisan Mountain, a well-known destination, the central meaning of the church is not tourism but the liturgical and communal life of local Catholics.
History & origins
The present Manisan community was established as a quasi-parish on January 26, 2004. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea records this date as its foundation date. At that time the Diocese of Incheon was organizing pastoral centers in the Ganghwa area through the quasi-parish system, and from this point Manisan took its place within the diocesan structure as a community with its own pastoral responsibility.
A 2007 article in the Catholic Times reported that the priest then serving Manisan had ministered there since the 'newly established Manisan Quasi-Parish' in 2004. This account aligns with the date in the official directory and supports 2004 as the beginning of the current quasi-parish structure. Reliable public sources located for this review, however, do not provide a continuous account of which parish or mission station served the local Catholics before the quasi-parish was created, nor do they securely establish when the present church building was completed and dedicated.
Today Manisan remains registered as a quasi-parish in the Ganghwa district of the Diocese of Incheon and has one mission station under its care. The securely documented historical core is therefore the establishment of the quasi-parish in 2004 and its continuation as an independent local pastoral center. Details about earlier affiliations or the church building should be added only when stronger evidence becomes available.
