About this place
Majeon-dong Parish belongs to the Seo-gu district of the Diocese of Incheon and forms a Catholic community centered on the Majeon and Dangha residential area in northwestern Incheon. The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea identifies Christ the King as its patron and lists one mission station under the parish. In an area whose population changed rapidly through new-town and housing development, the parish provides a stable local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The present parish complex has developed as more than a worship space, incorporating rooms for catechesis and meetings as well as a chapel for Eucharistic adoration. These facilities allow liturgy and prayer, formation, and fellowship to be sustained in one place. Majeon-dong Parish can therefore be understood as an example of a Catholic community formed amid the urban expansion of the Geomdan area and gradually established as a stable parish.
History & origins
Majeon-dong Parish was one of three parishes established by the Diocese of Incheon on November 24, 2004, together with Bullo-dong and Wondang-dong. At that time, the diocese assigned the new parish the Dangha housing-development district, parts of Majeon-dong and Dangha-dong, and the Handeul area of Baekseok-dong. The parish was organized as rapid residential growth in the Geomdan area made it increasingly difficult for existing parishes alone to serve the expanding Catholic population.
After its establishment, the community worked toward securing a permanent church. A groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated in April 2010, followed by about a year and a half of construction, and the parish moved into the building in October 2011. The new church had a total floor area of 4,430 square meters, with one basement level and three floors above ground. The basement contained a small chapel, meeting rooms, a Eucharistic adoration chapel, and parking; the first floor held offices and a book cafe; the second floor contained the main church and a room for young children; and the third floor held the choir loft. In this way, spaces for liturgy, formation, fellowship, and prayer were brought together in a single parish complex.
Further preparation and community organization continued after the move, and on November 25, 2012, Bishop Boniface Choi Ki-san presided at the dedication of the new church. The dedication, eight years after the parish was created, marked the transition of a Catholic community formed in a rapidly developing residential area from its initial stage to a parish with a permanent spiritual and pastoral home. As the dedication approached, the parish expressed its hope that the new church would become a place of prayer, love of neighbor, and cultural sharing, linking the completion of the building with a new stage in parish life.
