Conventual Franciscan Order

About this place

This place is the Ganghwa St. Peter Yu Tae-chol Monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The Guide to the Catholic Church in Korea registers the community in Yangdo-myeon, Ganghwa, as a male religious house within the Diocese of Incheon. Bearing the name of St. Peter Yu Tae-chol also allows the monastery to be understood as a place where the memory of Korea’s Catholic martyrs and devotion to the Korean saints are recalled within Franciscan religious life.

Its center of life is not the jurisdictional function of a territorial parish but the prayer and fraternal community of the friars. In keeping with the wider charism of the Conventual Franciscans, the community grounds its life in evangelical poverty and fraternity and serves the Church and local society through apostolic work as needed. Visitors can therefore best understand the place not as an ordinary parish church, but as a community where Franciscan spirituality and consecrated life continue under the patronal memory of a Korean martyr saint.
