About this place
Jung 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Bucheon 2 district of the Diocese of Incheon, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle. It serves the residential neighborhoods of Jung-dong in Bucheon as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory confirms that it was established as a Diocese of Incheon parish in 1994.
Because the parish was formed during the growth of Jung-dong new town, its identity is closely connected with the urban development of Bucheon. As the population and Catholic community continued to expand, Jung 1-dong Parish was later separated from it, while Jung 2-dong continued as an independent pastoral community within the Bucheon 2 district.
History & origins
The foundation of Jung 2-dong Parish was closely connected with the rapid growth and population influx of Bucheon’s Jung-dong new town from the late 1980s. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that, as Sang-dong Parish continued to grow with the new-town development, Jung-dong and Jung 2-dong Parishes were separated from it in February 1994. The official Catholic directory gives 14 February 1994 as the establishment date of Jung 2-dong Parish.
After becoming independent, the Jung 2-dong community continued to grow along with the expansion of the new town. As residential districts increased, so did the size of the parish territory and its pastoral responsibilities. In 2008, Jung 1-dong Parish was in turn separated and newly established from Jung 2-dong.
The history of Jung 2-dong is therefore a clear example of urban development and diocesan pastoral organization influencing one another. Each major increase in population led to adjustments in parish boundaries: Jung 2-dong itself was born from a division and later became the mother parish of another new community.
