About this place
Jung 1-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Bucheon 2 district of the Diocese of Incheon, with Saint John Mary Vianney as its patron. It serves Catholics in the Jung-dong new-town area of Bucheon as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory confirms that it was established as a Diocese of Incheon parish in 2008.
The parish currently occupies several floors of a commercial building rather than a freestanding church site. This arrangement illustrates one way an urban Catholic community can remain close to the daily living area of its members despite high-density land use. Jung 1-dong therefore functions as a distinctly urban parish closely integrated with the residential neighborhoods of Jung-dong.
History & origins
Jung 1-dong Parish was created in 2008 in response to the continued growth of the Catholic population in Bucheon’s Jung-dong new town. At that time the Diocese of Incheon established several new parishes at once. The Catholic Times records that Jung 1-dong was separated from Jung 2-dong Parish, and the official Catholic directory likewise dates its establishment to January 2008.
Its foundation forms part of the longer urban development of Jung-dong, where rapid population growth from the 1990s onward led to repeated parish reorganization. Several parishes already served the area, but as residential districts expanded and daily living zones became more distinct, a new parish was needed to provide closer pastoral care.
From the beginning, Jung 1-dong developed its community by using floors of an urban commercial building as parish space. Its history therefore reflects a model of urban parish formation focused less on constructing a monumental church and more on securing a stable place within the neighborhood for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
