Juan 8-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Michuhol district of the Diocese of Incheon, dedicated to Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first Catholic priest. It serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life for Catholics in Juan 8-dong and surrounding neighborhoods. The official Catholic directory confirms that the parish was established in 1979.
The parish was formed as the Catholic population of the Juan area increased and a new community was separated from Juan 1-dong Parish. It subsequently became an independent pastoral center amid the urban growth and reorganization of parishes in Juan. More recently, part of its territory contributed to the formation of Juan 7-dong Parish, linking its history to the continuing evolution of the local Church.
History & origins
Juan 8-dong Parish was established in July 1979 by separation from Juan 1-dong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records the new community under the name “Seogam Parish” and identifies it as the parish that later became Juan 8-dong. The separation took place in the broader context of rapid Catholic growth in Juan during the late 1970s, when the large territory of the older parish had to be divided.
The parish subsequently became established as an independent community serving Catholics in the Juan 8-dong area. As population patterns and pastoral needs continued to change, its boundaries also evolved. When Juan 7-dong Parish was created in 2023, part of the territory and community of Juan 8-dong, together with portions of Juan 1-dong and Juan 3-dong, helped form the new parish.
This history shows that Juan 8-dong is not simply the story of one church building. It is part of the wider development of the Church in Michuhol, where urbanization and population movement repeatedly led to parish division and the creation of new local Catholic communities.
