About this place

Juan 5-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Michuhol district of the Diocese of Incheon, with Saint Joseph the Worker as its patron. In an area where industrial and residential life developed side by side, the parish provides a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities. The official Catholic directory confirms that Juan 5-dong Parish was established in 1980 within the Diocese of Incheon.

Its patron, Saint Joseph the Worker, has particular resonance with the local setting. From its early years the parish showed concern for workers and local residents through pastoral outreach, education, and social care. It continues to provide the institutional and spiritual base through which Catholics in the neighborhood sustain their faith and community life.

History & origins

Juan 5-dong Parish was established in April 1980 by separating territory from Dohwa-dong and Juan 1-dong Parishes. The area was then commonly known as Yeomjeon, and the new parish initially used the name Yeomjeon Parish. In its first months, the community worshiped in a temporary church in Juan 5-dong while preparing the foundations of an independent parish.

A church-building committee was organized that same year, and construction of a permanent church began in 1981. Work on the convent and education facilities followed in 1982, along with the blessing of an Eucharistic adoration chapel, and the church was completed and dedicated. In 1983 the parish adopted its present name, Juan 5-dong Parish.

The parish later expanded pastoral and educational work for workers and local residents. During the 1980s it offered catechetical programs for workers, free medical service, and evening education, and an expansion of the education building was completed in 2000. This history shows a parish that developed while responding to both the social realities and the faith life of its neighborhood.
