About this place
Juan 1-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Michuhol district of the Diocese of Incheon, with the Holy Name of Jesus as its patronal title. Continuing the tradition of one of the older Catholic communities in the Juan area, the parish serves as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The official Catholic directory confirms Juan 1-dong as a parish of the Diocese of Incheon.
Its significance extends beyond that of a single neighborhood church. A mission station first took root in Juan, and as the population and Catholic community grew, an independent parish was established. Several neighboring parishes were later separated from it. Juan 1-dong therefore stands as one of the important mother parishes in the expansion and subdivision of Catholic communities across the Michuhol area.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Juan began to take a more organized form in 1926, when the Juan mission station was established under Dapdong Parish. Its jurisdiction later passed through Songnim-dong and then to Dohwa-dong Parish, founded in 1960. As both the local population and the number of Catholics increased, the need for an independent parish became pressing.
In 1963 the diocese decided to establish a new parish in Juan and proceeded with the construction of a church, rectory, and convent. The Juan parish was founded that year, and in its early period it also engaged in local outreach through free medical care, assistance to the poor, and a credit union. When Juan 2-dong Parish was separated in 1975, the original parish took the name Juan 1-dong Parish.
Growth continued, leading to further separations, including Seogam Parish in 1979 and Yeomjeon Parish in 1980. Juan 1-dong also renewed its own facilities: construction of a new church began in 1983, and the building was completed and dedicated in 1985. This development clearly shows how a single mission station in Juan grew into a network of multiple parishes.
