About this place
Jangchon Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in the southern part of Baengnyeong Island under Baengnyeongdo Parish of the Diocese of Incheon. The official Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists Jangchon not as an independent parish but as a mission station belonging to Baengnyeongdo Parish, and it remains one of the island’s mission communities sustaining local Catholic life. It reflects a distinctive feature of Baengnyeong Island, where village-level mission stations have served as nearby centers of faith in an environment where one parish church alone cannot easily serve the whole island.
Jangchon Mission Station is a community space where local Catholics pray together and preserve the memory of their faith, while also serving as a pastoral link between Baengnyeongdo Parish and the island’s villages. Recent Catholic pilgrimage coverage connects Jangchon with the other mission stations along Baengnyeong Island’s pilgrimage route, presenting them together as places where the island’s Catholic heritage can be encountered. Because Mass schedules can change with pastoral circumstances, the enduring significance of the place lies not in a fixed timetable but in the continuity of its mission community.
History & origins
Baengnyeongdo Parish was established on May 9, 1959, with Fr. Edward Moffett of the Maryknoll Missioners as its first pastor. Many refugees had settled on Baengnyeong Island after the Korean War, and Fr. Moffett combined evangelization with pastoral efforts that supported medical and everyday needs. A Catholic Peace Broadcasting and Newspaper report on the island explains that the Catholic community grew rapidly through this work and that a number of mission stations were established in villages around 1960.
Jangchon Mission Station is best understood within this expansion of the island’s network of mission communities. Jangchon is among the ten mission stations that remain on Baengnyeong Island today, and such village stations formed a central structure of island ministry by allowing Catholics to sustain community life even at a distance from the parish church. No publicly available official record gives an exact opening date for Jangchon itself, but the rapid growth of Baengnyeongdo Parish and the creation of multiple mission stations in the early 1960s provide its historical setting.
The Catholic Church Directory in Korea still lists Jangchon under Baengnyeongdo Parish. The continuity of a village community formed through early missionary expansion, maintaining its connection with the parish amid aging and population change, is the central thread in the history of Jangchon Mission Station.
