About this place

Jangbong Mission Station is a Catholic mission station on Jangbong Island under Sindo Quasi-Parish in the Yeongjong District of the Diocese of Incheon. In an island setting where reaching the parish church requires sea travel, the mission station provides a nearby place where local Catholics can pray together and sustain their communal faith. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea clearly lists it not as an independent parish but as a mission station receiving pastoral care from Sindo Quasi-Parish.

The significance of Jangbong Mission Station lies less in large church facilities than in providing a stable place for a Catholic community within the daily life of the island. The celebration of Mass and the sacraments depends on the pastoral arrangements of the mother parish, while the mission station itself remains a community space for prayer and the transmission of faith. It can be understood as a small Catholic bridge between the island communities of Bukdo-myeon and the parish ministry of the Diocese of Incheon.

History & origins

The Catholic community on Jangbong Island was long cared for within the island pastoral structure of Yeongjong Parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that the former Yeongjong mission station was elevated to parish status on June 30, 1965, and later lists Bukdo-myeon within the parish territory and Jangbong Island among its mission stations. Although it does not give the exact founding date of Jangbong Mission Station itself, it confirms that the Jangbong community formed part of a pastoral network linking several islands through Yeongjong Parish.

The pastoral structure of Bukdo-myeon was later reorganized with the establishment of Sindo Parish. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records December 5, 2006 as the establishment date of what is now Sindo Quasi-Parish and currently lists Sindo Quasi-Parish as the mother parish of Jangbong Mission Station. Jangbong thus continued from an earlier community within Yeongjong Parish’s broad island jurisdiction into a mission station receiving closer pastoral care from Sindo.

Publicly available official sources do not specify the first establishment date of Jangbong Mission Station itself or the construction and renovation history of its early buildings. Its history is therefore presented through the documented changes in ecclesiastical jurisdiction and the development of island ministry, without assigning unsupported dates to its foundation or buildings.
