About this place
Jakjeon-dong Catholic Church is the parish church of a parish in the Gyeyang District of the Diocese of Incheon and has St. Matthew as its patron saint. Centered on the Jakjeon-dong area, it is where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue their faith formation and parish community life. It is an independent parish distinct from the nearby Jakjeon 2-dong Parish.
The official Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the Sisters of Notre Dame as serving in the parish. As a local community in which priests, religious, and lay Catholics share in liturgy, faith formation, fellowship, and service, Jakjeon-dong Catholic Church is more than a worship building: it is the central parish space that organizes and sustains the ordinary life of faith of Catholics in this part of Gyeyang.
History & origins
Jakjeon-dong Parish was established in the Diocese of Incheon on February 18, 1991. The establishment date recorded in the official Catholic Church Directory marks the point at which the Jakjeon-dong community began pastoral life as an independent parish in the Gyeyang area. A March 1991 item in The Catholic Times also records the address of the new parish’s rectory in an apartment in Jakjeon-dong, showing that immediately after its establishment the community was still in an early stage of developing a permanent church and pastoral base.
The parish subsequently became established in Jakjeon-dong as a local parish with St. Matthew as its patron. Publicly available official Church sources, however, do not provide enough information to verify the construction and dedication dates of the present church or the detailed changes in the early parish territory. Its history is therefore presented around the securely documented establishment of the independent parish in 1991 and its initial temporary pastoral arrangements, without assigning unverified dates to the church building.
