About this place
St. Andrew Kim Taegon Catholic Church at Incheon Catholic University is a parish of the Yeonsu District of the Diocese of Incheon and is located in the Capella Building on the university’s Songdo International Campus. Its patron is St. Andrew Kim Taegon, Korea’s first Catholic priest and a martyr. Although the church stands within a university campus, the Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as an independent parish, giving it a dual character as both a campus church and a parish church serving the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in the Songdo area.
The building combines spaces for worship with rooms for education and community gatherings, and it enshrines a relic of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, making the martyrdom of the parish patron a tangible part of its devotional life. As a place where a Catholic university and a local parish community meet, the church links the identity of a Catholic educational institution with pastoral ministry in the growing Songdo area.
History & origins
On January 11, 2021, the Diocese of Incheon established a new parish centered on the Capella Building of Incheon Catholic University and named it St. Andrew Kim Taegon Parish of Incheon Catholic University. The new parish was created by dividing part of the territory of the existing Korean Martyrs Parish at Incheon Catholic University, with the southeastern portion of Songdo New Town assigned to the new parish along the boundary of Songdo International-daero.
The new church was dedicated on July 4 of the same year in a liturgy presided over by Bishop John Baptist Jung Shin-chul of Incheon. The building, with one basement level and four floors above ground, was designed with a main church, a smaller chapel, a Eucharistic adoration chapel, confessionals, and spaces for education and parish gatherings. Sacred art connected with the university’s artistic environment was incorporated into the building, and a vertebral relic of St. Andrew Kim Taegon was enshrined together with its certificate of authenticity.
The establishment of the parish and dedication of the church reflected the growth of the population and Catholic community in Songdo, which required the former parish territory to be divided and a new pastoral center to be created. Located on a university campus and dedicated to the martyr faith of St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the church has become a place where the local parish community and the Catholic identity of the university are carried forward together.
