About this place

The Korean Martyrs Catholic Church at Incheon Catholic University is a parish in the Yeonsu District of the Diocese of Incheon, serving a Catholic community in the Haesong-ro area of Songdo-dong. It is registered in the Catholic Church Directory in Korea as an independent parish, with the Korean Martyrs as its patrons. Although “Incheon Catholic University” forms part of its name, it is an independent parish community responsible for the Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation of local Catholics.

Its dedication to the Korean Martyrs gives the parish a clear spiritual identity. The parish carries into local liturgical and community life the Korean Catholic tradition of remembering those who bore witness to the faith during persecution. Formed alongside the development of the Songdo area, it is one of the pastoral centers through which the Diocese of Incheon serves the Catholic population of the district. It should be distinguished from St. Andrew Kim Taegon Catholic Church at Incheon Catholic University, which is a separate parish in Songdo despite the shared university name.

History & origins

The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records December 5, 2005 as the establishment date of the Korean Martyrs Parish at Incheon Catholic University. The parish was erected as an independent parish to serve the emerging Catholic community in Songdo and became one of the pastoral foundations of the developing Songdo International City.

As Songdo International City continued to develop and its population increased, the parish territory also changed. On January 11, 2021, the Diocese of Incheon divided part of the Korean Martyrs Parish territory and established the new St. Andrew Kim Taegon Parish at Incheon Catholic University. This was not simply a change of name for one parish, but a reorganization of pastoral responsibility so that two parishes could serve the expanding local Catholic community.

The Korean Martyrs Catholic Church has continued at its existing location as a parish of the Yeonsu District. Its establishment and later territorial division show how the Diocese of Incheon subdivided pastoral units in response to urban change in Songdo; today the two parishes continue as separate communities with distinct territories.
