About this place
Ilsin-dong Catholic Church is a parish church in the Bupyeong District of the Diocese of Incheon, serving Catholics in the Ilsin-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. It is registered in the Catholic Church Directory in Korea as an independent parish, with St. Andrew Kim Taegon as its patron.
The parish emerged through the growth of the Catholic population and the subdivision of pastoral territories in the Bupyeong area. By taking Korea’s first priest and martyr, St. Andrew Kim Taegon, as its patron, the parish carries the meaning of martyrdom and priestly vocation into the life of the local community. Having served the same area for decades, it functions not only as a place of liturgy but also as a neighborhood center where faith formation and parish relationships have accumulated across generations.
History & origins
Ilsin-dong Parish was born as Catholic communities in the Bupyeong area grew and a new pastoral territory became necessary. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s account of parish development in Bupyeong records that Ilsin-dong Parish was separated from an existing parish in March 1983, while the Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives the formal establishment date as March 3, 1983.
This separation formed part of a broader process of subdividing pastoral territories as the population and Catholic community of Bupyeong grew, allowing parishioners to participate in Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation closer to where they lived. After becoming an independent parish, the Ilsin-dong community continued its own liturgical, educational, and pastoral activities and became established as a local Catholic community within the neighborhood.
Today, Ilsin-dong Catholic Church continues the history of the independent parish begun at that time as part of the Bupyeong District. Within the broader pattern of parishes growing and being divided as Bupyeong developed, the establishment of Ilsin-dong Parish illustrates how the diocese’s pastoral structure was progressively subdivided at the local level in response to urban change.
