About this place
Ijak Mission Station is an island Catholic community of the Diocese of Incheon, serving believers on Ijakdo in Jawol-myeon, Ongjin County as a place for Mass and the life of a mission-station community. The Korean Catholic Bishops’ Conference also lists Ijak Mission Station in its guide to Catholic churches near tourist destinations, confirming that it remains an active Catholic presence on an island located far from mainland parishes.
A mission station is a smaller Catholic community that functions under the pastoral care of a parish rather than as an independent parish. In the geographical conditions of an island, Ijak Mission Station is significant as a place that enables local Catholics to gather and remain connected to the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church. Visitors should therefore understand it according to the pastoral circumstances of an island mission station rather than assume the same pattern of continuous operation as a parish church on the mainland.
