About this place

Hyosung-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gyeyang District in the Diocese of Incheon, forming the Catholic community of Hyosung-dong and surrounding areas in Gyeyang-gu. The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists St. James as its patron. Today the parish serves as one of the pastoral centers of Catholic life in Gyeyang, providing a place for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community activities.

Hyosung-dong Parish did not begin with a large completed church. It emerged as the local Catholic population grew rapidly and the need for an independent parish became clear. That background remains important for understanding the church today, because evangelization by local Catholics, the organization of the community, and their participation in securing a place of worship were all major forces in the parish's formation. Hyosung-dong is therefore both an institutionally established parish and a church shaped through the growth and participation of its local lay community.

History & origins

The immediate background to Hyosung-dong Parish was the growth of the Catholic community in Hyosung-dong while it was still under Sanggok-dong Parish. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, around 1980 local Catholics carried out active evangelization centered on the Legion of Mary, and the number of believers increased sharply within only a few months. The community grew enough to request its own parish, and in February 1981 the Diocese of Incheon separated Hyosung-dong from Sanggok-dong Parish and established it as a new parish.

The new parish did not initially have a permanent church of its own. Parishioners organized a church-building committee and raised funds, while cooperation from the mother parish helped establish a credit union to provide financial support. In 1981 the community rented a building for parish use and celebrated its first Mass there, then moved to a larger rented space the following year as the number of parishioners continued to grow.

The parish later purchased the site where the present church stands as the basis for a permanent church complex. Evangelization, Mass in temporary facilities, collective fundraising, and the acquisition of land followed one another as Hyosung-dong developed into a stable local parish. This history shows that the parish was shaped not only by an administrative decision of the diocese but also by the active participation and organization of the local faithful.
